What to Expect With Your First Chiropractic Appointment

It may have started with a headache, back pain, neck pain, or that pulled muscle that really never got better. Now you’re taking way too much over-the-counter pain medication to try to ease it and your sleep is suffering. When you’ve got pain and you’re looking to get past the medications and invasive treatments, perhaps a visit to the chiropractor is in order. If you’ve never been to one, here is what to expect when you first go in to a chiropractor appointment.

Before Your Chiropractic Appointment

Make sure you have your insurance cards and any other health information before leaving and make sure you dress in comfortable clothing. Skirts and dresses may not be advisable and you don’t want tight clothing where the doctor is going to be unable to manipulate the extremities. If you are having soft tissue work done such as massage, you’ll need to make sure that you have on clothing that can be moved around so that they can get to the areas they need to work on. It may go without saying, but wear underwear.

During Your Chiropractic Appointment

When you get to the office you will be handed forms to fill out that will let the office know about your health history and what you are coming to the doctor for today. You can also access the forms online by clicking here. There may be releases for x-rays, if that is also needed. After you fill out this paperwork, you’ll turn it back in and wait to be seen. When called back from the waiting room, you’ll first see the doctor and he will run some tests typically be a reflex, neurological and orthopedic tests done to test for muscle tone and range of motion.

After those initial test are completed you will be evaluated and the doctor will go over what they believe may be wrong and their treatment plan. There could be other tests needed or follow-up care. Your chiropractor is going to be dedicated to getting you healed and feeling better, with better range of motion and with as little pain as possible. Adhering to what your chiropractor asks of you is crucial, but if there are things that you are uncomfortable with, please voice your concerns while still in the office. There may be alternatives that the doctor can bring up.

Depending on diagnosis and expected treatment plan, you may be getting soft tissue work, electrical stimulation, decompression, taping, alignments, or other manipulations. Your doctor will discuss all of this ahead of time so there are no surprises. There may be several of these done in a visit, or only one. Again, it will depend on the treatment plan and your diagnosis.

After Your Chiropractic Appointment

After the visit you may feel better, or you may feel slightly worse in the beginning. After a few hours, however, if you were feeling worse you should begin to start icing 20 min on with an hour off cycle to feel more relaxed and at ease with your muscles and joints relaxing and adjusting to their proper alignment. You may need more than one treatment to get your body back into balance, and your chiropractor will tell you what they believe is best. You are always in control of your treatment. If a follow-up visit is planned, you will get a card telling you of your next appointment date. Chiropractor appointments are generally relaxing and easy, you should feel better immediately or within a few visits. Your visits may not be the same every time you go, depending on your diagnosis. Your doctor will space these treatments as needed for the best possible outcome.
